IN PRAISE OF
"OLDER"
MEXICAN LAKES!
As many of you know; that have been
chasing bass in Mexico for any length of time, their lakes tend to have
very dramatic cyclic periods and produce excellent angling for a period
of time and then seem to go through periods of decline with very poor
angling and catch success ratios in relationship to actual time spent on
the water. No where on earth is this more prevalent than in Old
Mexico. There are many reasons for this up and down ebb and flow at most
Mexican Lakes, but one of the main contributing factors in this
phenomenon are the massive changes in lake elevations at most Mexican
Lakes. Almost all Mexican Lakes were and still are first and
foremost constructed for use in irrigating vast amounts of farm land and
for generating and supplying electricity for the surrounding
countryside. Recreational use is almost never given any
consideration and therefore bass angling is mostly a by product of these
man made impoundments.
One such older Mexican Lake that has
made a dynamic cycle back to excellent angling is Presa Marte R. Gomez (Sugar
Lake, Tamaulipas). This is one of the oldest lakes in all of
Mexico with dam completion back in the early 40's! The lake has
gone through many up-down cycles, to include some of the finest bass
fishing found in the world and guess what? Sugar Lake is back in
all it's glory and then some! With the completion of the EL Cuchillo Dam
upstream in 1994 on the same river, this has helped to keep Sugar Lake
from being drawn down to such low levels so as to stress the bass and
creating massive fish kills. Another added bonus is that Cuchillo
was stocked with Florida Genetics and many of these bass have been
released from Cuchillo and found their way into this beautiful older
Mexican Lake. With very little fishing pressure for the past 12
years the bass population at Sugar has exploded and with a very prolific
forage base there is now and extremely large abundance of trophy bass
just waiting for all eager Gringo Anglers! Another added bonus is
the fact that Sugar Lake is so close to the US border (30 minute drive)
that in fact, no Mexican Visa is even required to cross into Mexico to
fish this wonderful older Mexican Lake.
