Huites Fishing Reports
2002
12-24-02
FELIZ
NAVIDAD!
What
can one say about beautiful Lake Huites that hasn't already been
reported many times in the past? The fishing still remains
outstanding for many anglers that make this pilgrimage to Mexico's
premiere Bass Angling Paradise! The lake has finally been
stabilized by the Mexican Lake Officials who have been lowering
the lake some 1-3 feet per day since the first part of October in anticipation
of the mountain rains-snowfall that take place annually over the
high Sierras during the winter months. They however have not
been releasing water for the past 10 days or so and the water is
quickly clearing, the bass are finally becoming settled and
establishing a very predictable pattern and the big bite is
beginning to pick back up once again. The Lodge with the
Lakes top guides is still putting their customers on outstanding
numbers and quality fish. Call us toll free today. We
still have a few spots left for the rest of this upcoming season.

Just in from Lake Huites Lodge:
Wrote...Well this year was
different than most. Water level was down so you had a lot of
brush to fish. The bass were on the long slope-ing points with
thick brush. The brush flats were also very good. I had topwater
every day and every night, others did not. (That's normal) some
had a spinnerbait bite on gold blades, I did not. Caught lots of
fish on Rattletraps but the number one bait was to drift amongst
the dead trees andjust throw a Senko on 20# Fireline and a
spinning rod. Flip to little holes and let it sink. Used the new
Sticky Weight stuff and it worked real nice. Just pinch off a wad,
mold it on the head of the line and instant split shot. Some hot
sticks got 80 fish the first morning, others got back to back
8-11's (John and Brad) my partners Tim and Ant got a 9 # and lots
of 5-6's etc on senkos. The two 8-11 were on 10-12inch watermellon
black seed worms. Rene went out with me one afternoon and had me
12 to two, he was using a 6 inch watermellon worm as thin as a
nail, so just about everything was happening. The first river arm
had dinks in it ready to hit a RT or Fat free shad (silver) but
the big fish were staged out on the secondary points in the heavy
brush about 6-10 feet deep. Had a pretty good wind blow the three
days and my guide took me to the back of coves out of the wind,,,
the fish were at the front of the coves in the wind. Lots of
guides used thier ropes to tie up and just fish a big circle of
brush. Had Chicken cardon blue the first night,(wow Huge porkchops
with brown gravy and mushrooms the second night and big fat steaks
the last night. Met guys from another camp in the airport lounge
and they did not do well. They were sick hearing our stories of
big fish and big fish. Water is stable and things should just get
better. If you need info write me. Thanks Terry, loved it. Cosmic.

Happy Thanksgiving!
Just in from Lake Huites Lodge:
Just returned from a trip to Lake Huites...fished
Nov.21-Nov.23. As my first
International fishing experience, we could not have picked a
better place. We spent a majority of
our time up in the canyons where the bite was active...not
overly large, but active. We happened on a school of 2-4 pounders
at the end of the first morning and boated nearly 70 fish in an
hour and a half. The majority of the fish were between 2 and 3lbs,
but when you're catching them one after the
other, it's FUN! They really wanted the Chrome
RattleTrap burned just under the surface. The afternoon was spent
dropping a white "fluke" type bait into
the expansive wood cover that lines the
canyons. The better fish seem to want the bait on slow fall.
Boated several 4 and 5 pounders out of the
heavy tree cover. The day was capped off
with a stellar top water bite from about 5 to 6pm.
The second day started slower. The lake was dropping about 2
feet per day and the fish seemed to
move...but once found, we picked right up where we left
off. The numbers coming on the chrome 3/4oz Rattletrap and the
better fish coming on the white fluke. We
did venture out on the main lake to fish deeper
points but only picked up the occasional fish. Ended the day with
another strong top water bite, including
several 5 pounders.
Day 3 was a close cousin to day 1 with a us finding a
feeding frenzy on the rattletrap.
This time, the school was a bit larger, with the average fish
falling in the 3+ range. The fluke bite was still
active with the 4's and 5's preferring the
slow fall. Rene and the lodge staff were
better than even described. The guide (Jesus) was
great. You literally don't have raise a finger...just fish. The
food is excellent and there is plenty of it.
The staff jump at the opportunity to
assist...if only my wife...never mind! The rooms were clean and
the beds, comfortable. I
will say this, the trip from Los Mochis to the lake is every bit
of 3+ hours. And the last 1-1/2 is a rough
road. No written word can explain the road
conditions. We probably didn't exceed 15MPH. But believe me, it's
worth it!!! Several other visitors at the lodge
were repeat customers. All were explaining
how the falling water was making the fishing less productive
than normal. We didn't see the "grande"
catch that some postings have exhibited,
but ACTION is an understatement.
November 11, 2002
Fished five days from 10-31 to
11-4. As usual the lodge and personnel were great and I had a great
trip. The fishing was a little tougher than it has been in the past
but we still averaged over 150 fish a day for the boat. You could
catch lots of small fish by finding the shad and throwing small
crankbaits or rattletraps but the better fish we caught all came off
of structure, underwater islands, points and creek channels in the
back of coves. The Carolina rig was much better than the Texas rig
with pumpkinseed worms. We were fishing the points with 3/4 ounce
Bill Dance Cranks in solid white and shad colors. We also caught a
lot of 4 to 8 pound fish by jigging 3/4 ounce rattletraps off the
bottom. As I said the fishing was a little tougher and you had to
work to find the fish but when we did we would usually catch
anywhere from 4 or 5 to thirty at any one location. I am looking
forward to my next trip down and wish everybody that is going down
good luck.

Just in from Rene Salazar-Lake Huites Lodge:
The week of Oct 27th to Nov 2.
The water was lightly stained to clear over most of the Lake with the
water temperature slowly dropping, helping to create better action from
the previous week. The best and biggest fish were caught using 1
oz Carolina rigged 12" worms in red shad, pumpkin and sour grape.
Spinnerbaits - white with silver blades produced good numbers from 1 to
7 pounds. Fat Free Shads in natural Shad colors and 1 oz silver-chrome
Rattle Traps also worked good on the points, with 100 fish per boat/ per
day common this past week. Look for the bass to become more
active and move in tighter to the shoreline related cover as the water
temperatures continue to slowly fall though the month of November.
The great winter time schooling patterns on Huites are just weeks away
and we still have a few spots open in December-January, so give us a
call today and lets talk about the world's greatest bass angling!

October 24, 2002
Lake Huites just keeps getting better. Current
conditions at the lake are excellent. The weather is great and
most importantly the fish are biting. The morning top water bite
has been incredible. Mr. Ed Turner from Discovery Bay, California and
his group fished out of Lake Huites Lodge this past week. His parting
statements were; Top water in the morning, change to spinner baits
and worms in the afternoon and you could literally fill the
boat. We will be back. Ed said they were catching too many fish to
count, but he was sure they averaged over 125 per day. At times he
remarked it was a guaranteed fish on every cast. Ed’s biggest
fish was eight pounds. These ten pound fish that are being caught at
this time will be12 to 15 pounds in February and March during the
pre-spawn. Traveling with Ed was John Framstead who landed the
biggest bass of the week with two over ten pounds. Both fish were
caught in the afternoon on worms in shallow water. (less than ten
feet) John said to use a ¼ oz sinker close to the bait and a
slightly erratic return. So there you have it: The fishing is
excellent, the food is superb, the fish are getting bigger and the
margaritas are cold. Give us a call at 800-353-8901 to book your
reservation.
October 15, 2002
Just in from Lake Huites Lodge:
Fishing in the canyons is excellent, as the bass have
moved up into the cover right on shore. The Topwater bite has been great in the mornings
using pop-r's, but the larger Bass are still
being caught off main lake points while fishing deeper water
with 10" worms. Bass up to
11 pounds have been caught this week while swimming worms across
deep structure and drop-offs. The water is
clear with a warming weather trend. The lake level is slowly
falling as water is being released into Lake Hidalgo downstream
and the largest number of bass caught yesterday, October 14th, in
one boat was 131. It certainly
looks as if this could be the banner year we have all been waiting
for at beautiful Lake Huites!

Lake Huites Lodge opened the new season on Oct
2! Rene and Manuel along with all the other
guides had been pre-fishing the Lake for about 10
days prior to opening, and they had lots of
quality bass located for our first group of
anglers. With last year providing us with
such fantastic angling for numbers and huge fish,
we were really nervous with anticipation,
hoping that this season also continues this trend
of unbelievable angling and yes, Rene has put my
mind at ease, reporting that good numbers of
quality fish have already been caught up to 11
pounds while fishing the long points & ridges
using Crankbaits & Plastic Worms. The water is
gin clear, with the lake elevation being almost
exactly where it was last October and still slowly
rising from recent mountain rains. So, all
in all, we are looking forward to another
fantastic season on Lake Huites.!
Hope to see you at the Lake soon, as this next
eight months should prove to be the very best ever
on beautiful Lake Huites!

August

Lake Huites has risen almost 100 feet in elevation since July 16th
with more heavy rainfall predicted over the mountainous watershed
for the next several weeks. All this nutrient rich run-off,
along with all the new cover being inundated is a big , big plus
for the Huites Bass population and the re-opening of the fishing
season in October. If you haven't made your plans for this
up coming season, now is the time to give us a call. I look
for Huites to have it's very best season to date, with all those
10 pound plus Bass adding even more weight by October. Give
us a call today for our literature packet and pricing for the
absolute "BEST" Lodge and Mexican Fishing
Adventure available on Lake Huites.

All
Lodges at Lake Huites are currently closed for the rainy
season. Lake Huites has risen a staggering 70 feet in just the
past three weeks. However, Rene Salazar of Lake Huites Lodge
says he has checked several of the deeper Canyons this past week and
he reports the top-water action was absolutely the best he has ever
experienced, despite the huge rise in the lake elevation, with bass
being caught on almost every cast one afternoon! Before the rainy season begins to diminish
across the huge watershed in the High Sierra's sometime in
September, Lake Huites will more than likely receive another 100 feet
of run-off or more. Lake Hidalgo and Lake Dominguez located
downstream below the Huites Dam will also be filled to maximum
capacities based on the rain fall amounts that are recorded in the
watershed this season. If you haven't made your reservations
for next season at Lake Huites, now is the time to make sure your
favorite time is still available. Huites is destined to
continue to be the absolute "HOT LAKE" in all Old Mexico
for the foreseeable future.

June 15, 2002
Just got
back from another good Lake Huites trip. Fished from 6-2-02
to 6-6-02, 4 days of actual fishing. One boat, three people,
616 fish caught and released. Caught over 100 every day
including 195 the last day. Caught 27 fish between 4 and 7
pounds. Two largest were 6.5 and 6.9 pounds. No true
giants caught but many quality chunky bass caught. We spent
the majority of our time in the arroyo you told us about and it
proved worthwhile as that is where most of our larger fish came
from. The majority of our larger fish were caught using
Carolina-rigged flukes and worms ( the flukes seemed to be the
most successful ). We had the best luck fishing the steepest
bluffs with the fewest visible trees. We would throw the
Carolina-rigs all the way to the bluffs, feed out line to let them
fall vertically to the bottom, then bounce them along the ledges
if any ledges were present. The bluffs that had ledges in
the 15 to 30 feet range usually held big fish. The last day
we found yearlings schooling on the first point downstream from
the train trestle, caught fish every cast on rattletraps, 60 in an
hour, then left in search of larger ones. We also found a
good main lake point producing both quantity and size the last
day. We didn't have time to checkout some of the other main
lake points and humps as I am sure they held good fish also, maybe
next time. We are looking forward to spending more time at
Lake Huites in May of next year.

Cal
Abreu purchased one of my Lake Huites Maps several weeks ago
and he has just returned from a great trip down South. Cal noted
that the temperatures were running in the mid 70's at night to
near 100 by the late afternoons and the water temperature was in
the high 70's. The number of bass caught during his three day
trip were 567, with the average size running 2-5 pounds,
however, some "GRANDEES" were also caught, with a nice
11.4, 10.3, 10.1, 9.13, 9.2 and several over 8 pounds weighed
in. Among the most productive lures used were large lizards,
10 1/2" worms, big 3/4 oz. crank baits and top water baits
early and late. Cal can't say enough good things about Lake
Huites and the great angling!

Lake
Huites Lodge
We
had a group of 12 anglers fishing Lake Huites April 21-23rd taking
advantage of the great post spawn action
that Huites is noted for this time of year. Each boat
averaged 50-75 quality bass per day. The bass are
beginning to school on main lake points as well as the many humps
to be found at Lake Huites with excellent results on Carolina
& Texas worms-lizards. Flukes and Poppers are still
working good early-late with a good crank-bait pattern
later in the mornings. Larger, 3/4-1 oz. Crankbaits
worked in a little deeper water while probing the tops of
submerged trees are also paying off nicely with some larger bass.
The largest bass caught and released was a little over 11 pounds, with four more weighing in
at over nine pounds each. The group was very pleased with the
overall action and the quality fish caught and they are all looking
forward to another return trip to Lake Huites soon.
You can look for the angling to steadily improve over the next 45-60 days
before the rainy season sets in across the Sierra Madres Mountain
Range and with the warmer water temperatures, it will be easy,
predictable
summer time fishing patterns for the rest of the season at Lake
Huites. Call me today for more
information about the great action to be found during the months
of May-June at Lake Huites.

Hola Pitch:
We just got back from our trip. Overall we
had a good trip. The quantity
of fish
was as expected. The average size was less than expected.
The maps were helpful, though I didn't get to do a lot of structure
searching, the two with me were the average bank fishing type that
didn't have much patience for structure searching .
We caught most of our fish up the canyon you told us about, we
went as far up as the train trestle. I regret that we didn't
go further as I re-read your email letter you sent on the way
home, the way you explained the best views and fishing were
up there, next time we will explore this area also. But you were
right, the scenic bluffs and deep water were breath-taking.
Fished from 3/24/02 to 3/29/02, 4.5 days of
actual fishing. One boat, three people.
485 fish caught and released, estimated 1500 strikes. 16 fish over
4 lbs, three largest were 6.6, 7.0, and 7.7.
Water temperature was 71-73 degrees.
Water had 3-5 feet visibility and a healthy green algae-bloom
tint. Majority of fish including almost all of
larger fish caught fishing the
steeper canyon banks that contained the more isolated structure.
Coves, shallow flats, and long
sloping banks produced good numbers but only 2 over 4
lbs. Crankbaits produced good numbers, but all large fish were
caught on Texas-rigged worm with
3/8oz weight to get deeper and a 1/2 oz white spinnerbait.
Flying, biting bugs and chiggers bad, bring spray.

Catch
Report from
Terry Hollan for week
ending
27 March 2002
Lake
Huites is just getting better and better. The fish are incredibly
health y and aggressive.
I truly was astonished. I would
hook a four pounder and each time I thought I had hooked a
whale. The strength of the fish are amazing.
The early morning top water bite was off just a little.
This was probably due to the fullness of the moon.
Crank baits always seem to work. While working a shallow
diver I was catching a fish on about every third cast.
A couple of our guests from Mississippi reported excellent catches
off the face of the dam. They
would cast right at the dam and let their bait slide down the
face. They reported a
twelve inch worm was the best.
Two fish over nine pounds were landed. Our Texas guests seemed to prefer using shorter plastic off the
points. They reported their best catches on white and off course
water melon seed.
Don’t wear yourself out during the day.
Around five o’clock, just as the sun is starting to set,
the top water action returns.
It is best to work the shaded areas of the bluffs.
The big fish for the week was a 11.8 caught by Lloyd Coville using
a white fluke.
Terry Hollan Adventures is pleased to announce their sponsorship
of a Lake Huites Professional Bass Tournament in October of 2002.
$25,000 in prize monies will be distributed.
Full details will be released soon.
