STRUCTURE-COVER
DEFINED
One topic that continually seems to pop up is the
misconception of what is ‘structure’ and what is ‘cover’. Even highly
experienced anglers have been known to address these definitions incorrectly.
Correctly understanding what each is and, more importantly, what each IS NOT
provides the foundation for being able to understand fish habits and movement
patterns.
The following information is my attempt to clarify what constitutes structure
and what constitutes cover, plus how to address them. While they can sometimes
be one in the same, you will see that they are normally two entirely different
things.
BASIC STRUCTURE vs. COVER
The terms ‘cover’ and ‘structure’ are NOT synonymous. They are different
features.
COVER is for safety and hiding/ambushing prey. Cover consists of weeds, trees,
branches, tulles, brush, stick-ups, rocks and man-made objects like docks, fish
attractors, sunken tires, etc.
STRUCTURE is basically used for orientation and movement routes. Geologic in
nature, structure is normally a very defined, permanent underwater feature, such
as a drop-off, ledge, submerged hump, saddle, flat, or river/creek channel edge.
A productive structure feature is one that serves as a reference point during
periods of inactivity, or is used as a movement route. It may also provide ready
access to nearby feeding areas. The potential of a given structure feature can
be reasonably determined by: 1) the nearby availability of 25 feet or more of
depth; 2) and, the ‘steepness’ of the drop-off associated with the access to
that depth. When a bass experiences fear or senses danger, his instinctive
reaction is to dash for the nearest deep water. Unless actively feeding, a bass
will nearly ALWAYS hold near the edge of the structure drop into deep water. Of
all available structure features, ledges and drops are the most common and the
most continuously productive.
You can have cover on structure. An example of this would be a stump bed on top
of a submerged hump, or along a submerged creek channel edge. ‘Cover on
structure’ is the combination we normally strive to find when searching for
actively feeding game fish.
The best cover zones will normally be very close to the deep-water access.
Therefore, it gives that, of all available structure features, ledges and drops
are the most common AND the most continuously productive.
A ‘drop’ is a contour change resulting in deeper water and has a downward angler
of decent of 30 degrees, or more. Any change less than 30 degrees is considered
a slope and will not be as productive.
A ‘ledge’ is the upper lip, or edge, of a drop. While ledges and drops usually
exist throughout a body of water, those associated with submerged channels and
the deepest water in the area are always the more consistently productive.
‘Pattern depth’ is a term used to define the location (depth) the majority of
bass schools can be expected to be found in a given body of water. It is
dependent upon the coloration/ clarity of the water. The ‘pattern depth’ of the
normal, lightly stained reservoir is 12-18 feet. The clearer the water, the
greater (deeper) the ‘pattern depth’.
Now, we must have a rational and orderly approach to addressing structure.
Structure fishing is a seven-step process, each of which is important to being
successful. In order, the steps are:
DEFINE: This simply means that we have gained enough knowledge about structure
basics to understand what we should be looking for. We must be able to define in
our own minds those types of underwater topography that are likely to hold bass.
This definition is in terms of shape, soil composition, relation to the
surrounding area (deep water, channels, current flow, other structures),
available cover, water conditions, and seasonal aspects.
RESEARCH: Generally, this step involves an armchair analysis of the intended
fishing waters to determine what structures are available. The expected
structure will differ between, say, a shallow Florida lake and a Tennessee
reservoir and we can readily fix in our own minds what probably should be
available. A study of a good topographical map is essential in this step.
LOCATE: Once we have completed the first two steps and actually are on the
water, locating the structure is a logical progression of events. If we have
done our research adequately and have a working knowledge of the use of a depth
sounder or graph, structure depicted on the map should be fairly easy to locate.
DEFINE: Once our target structure is pinpointed, it is very important that we
define it in terms of shape, ledges/drop-offs, deep-water locations, hard/soft
bottom compositions and available cover features.
EVALUATE: Now that we have defined the structure, we must evaluate just how it
should be fished. This involves the proper lure types, the exact locations which
hold the most potential, where we should position the boat, and how best to
present the chosen lures. All these factors are intended to maximize our initial
effectiveness, without first spooking the bass.
EXPLOIT: This is nothing more than combining all the above factors to catch the
maximum number of fish off the selected structure feature.
RETAIN: The final step is to adequately mark our map so that we can later return
to this same location and, once again, successfully exploit it. A bit more
should be involved than drawing a big circle on the map. The recorded
information should indicate enough of the valid evaluation data to tell us where
on the structure to fish, from which direction, what depth and what lures apply.

IS LAKE BACCARAC
THE BEST LAKE IN MEXICO?
SEVEN
REASONS
WHY I THINK IT IS!

18+Pound
Baccarac Hog

CLICK FOR LARGE VIEW
OF LAKE BACCARAC
1. Baccarac
was initially stocked with all Florida Genetics.
Therefore, there is very little cross spawning with the smaller
Northern genetics. There were a few Northern bass in the
Sinaloa River before the lake was constructed, however, this
population was so small that this has never been a factor in the
average larger size bass population at Baccarac. Two (2) of the world's largest top 25 bass
have been caught at Lake Baccarac! The "Official"
Certified Lake record bass weighed in at an incredible 19+
pounds.
2.
Baccarac is located in the foothills of the Sierra Madre
Mountain Range which means it is a remote, difficult lake to
access for the local anglers in the area as well as drive in
American anglers. In fact, the closest large city is
located some 2-1/2 hours drive from the lake and there are very
few bass anglers living in Los Mochis; say compared to Monterey,
Nuevo Leon, a city of several million inhabitants with dozens of
local and area bass clubs and thousands of avid bass anglers.
There are
tournaments at all area lakes in Northern Mexico most any weekend of the year.
The bass mortality at Mexican tournaments coupled with the delayed mortality rate of trophy bass is
exceptionally high, especially during the hot summer months when
ambient air temperatures can exceed 110 degrees and water
temperatures are in the 90's at most of these
Northern lakes. This is not a factor at Lake Baccarac.
All trophy bass are photographed and quickly released. In
other words, the "Trophy Bass Population" in Lake Baccarac is not being exploited
and depleted like they are at the Northern Lakes in the States of Tamaulipas
and Nuevo Leon!
3. Baccarac
has very strict-enforced rules
about the harvest of all Trophy Bass by local Commercial
fishermen and visiting American anglers alike. The lake is
managed strictly as a "catch and release" lake only and we
strongly recommend and promote plastic-fiberglass mounts! Artificial
Mounts are far superior to real-skin mounts and the prices are
sometimes cheaper than an actual skin mount without all the
problems associated with the skin mounts such as long term
discoloration and rotting problems. A plastic mount never
needs to be re-painted, but all skin mounts eventually require
additional work. In other words, Baccarac is truly being managed
as a Trophy "Catch & Release" Lake with mostly all Florida Genetics
that are increasing in size at incredible rates!
4.
Baccarac does not have fishing tournaments, nor does the
local association promote tournament angling.
5.
Baccarac has excellent lakeside accommodations with fully
equipped bass boats to include 22 foot Skeeter's rigged with
300HP Mercury motors for those discriminating angler's that
require this type boat to have a "successful
fishing trip."
The Lodge has some of the best guides that have ever been
trained on any lake in the world and they know how and where to
catch big bass throughout the whole fishing season and will
always do their very best to put you on the fish of a lifetime.
6.
Baccarac has a very well maintained 5200 foot paved
airstrip which is located only minutes from the lake and Lodge.
Charter flights can be arranged from most anywhere in the US
which then fly you directly to the lake. This saves all
the hassles, delays, plane changes, lost tackle and luggage that
can be involved with all commercial flights, not to mention the
hard 2-1/2 hour drive from Los Mochis or Culican to the lake.
And as an extra added bonus; generally air charter customers can
get in an afternoon on the water their arrival day; in other
words, an extra one half day of fishing and extra time to
possibly land your largest bass of a life-time! We
specialize in Air Charter Service and fly King Air 200's, 350's
and large Cessna's with capacities for 6-8 customers with
baggage and gear.
7.
Baccarac has the very best Local, State and Federal Lake
Association that has ever been formed in Mexico; with only one
goal in mind; and of course that being to make certain that Lake
Baccarac remains the absolute very best lake in Mexico so
that all visiting anglers can have their best ever bass angling
adventure with the best probability of catching a bass of a lifetime
as well!
If you would like to
experience Lake Baccarac during this exceptional cycle back to
excellent trophy angling; please call me for availability for
this upcoming season. We expect to be totally booked for
2008.

Try
the neat rigging explained below.
You'll be hooked!
Weedless Rigging With An Easy
Hook-set
If you
use a soft fluke lure, such as the
new
‘PEFECT FLUKE’
(or a
‘RIPPIN’ STICK’
- type soft jerk bait) you know how
difficult it is to keep the lure
weedless, while also assuring a good
hook-set. If you really rig the lure
fully weedless, you often make
hook-setting difficult. The reverse
is that, if you skimp on the
weedless rigging (so you can have a
better chance at a positive
hook-set), you may get snagged a
lot.
Well, we were experimenting with the
‘PEFECT FLUKE’
and came up with a genuine
‘now, why didn’t I think of that’
idea. Now, we can have
BOTH
great weedless rigging and great
hook-set potential.

The photos above illustrate our
really neat little trick. It
involves cutting a vertical slot
through the lure body, from the
curve of the hook to ½ to ¾-inch
forward of the curve. This will not
interfere with the positive use of
the hook slot, but DOES allow the
hook freedom of movement
forward
and
upward
when you set the hook on a fish.
The unhampered hook moves forward
and jumps up and out of the hook
slot!
This will increase your hookup ratio
dramatically.
Experiment. It works great with the
'PERFECT FLUKE’,
the
‘RIPPIN’ STICK’,
and other similar soft plastics!

Buck Perry
An American Fishing Legend
For
those of you that have never heard of Buck Perry, I
would like to take a few minutes and introduce you to
this fine old Southern gentleman. Buck was an avid
fisherman all his life and he also had an uncanny knack
for putting his theories and beliefs' about Bass Angling
and all the many faucets involved in becoming a great
bass angler down in writing. His book;
"SPOONPLUGGING" first published in 1965, is by far one
of the best ever written about structure fishing and
this book can help both the novice angler as well as the
most seasoned pro become a more productive angler.
Buck's book is still available and I would encourage
anyone that has not already done so to pick up a copy of
this great book and spend time on the water practicing
some of Buck's favorite axiom's about how to catch more
and bigger fish. I was very fortunate to have been
introduced to this grand old gentleman of bass angling
way back in 1965 and I have been refining and using his
theories for the past 42 years to help me maximize my
"Catchin" time while on any body of water. Buck
Perry was truly the "Grand Daddy" of Structure Angling
and his book and other study courses can be purchased at
the link listed below. It might just be the best
investment you'll ever make, to help you understand and
pattern more of those elusive, finny critters we call
"Bass!"

23 out of
the 26 anglers caught at least 1 bass 10 pounds or
bigger with the largest bass weighing
15.6 and the second biggest weighing
14.9.
David
Davies caught the 14.9 along with 5 others over 11
pounds on the same day. Many boats reported
catching between 150 and 200 bass a day. Rene could not
even begin to describe how productive the lake is right
now. Crankbaits and more Crankbaits are the top
producers at Baccarac right now!
We look
for the topwater action to be excellent this fall with
all the new water and flooded green cover.
Baccarac is coming up in elevation daily, as the summer
rains are producing huge volumes of run-off at most West
coast lakes and we look for Baccarac to be near normal
pool elevation again this fall.

MEXICAN RAINY
SEASON

The west coast
Mexican States of Sonora, Sinaloa and Nayarit where most
of the lakes are located that American Anglers fish are
receiving plentiful rainfall over the mountains on a
daily-nightly basis this summer and all these lakes are
slowly filling to Pool or near Pool Elevations once
again. However, the dry season in that area of
Mexico is just about to begin and the cycle of lowering
these lakes for electric power generation and irrigation
will begin once again soon. For those of you that
have never experienced the rainy season over the Sierra
Madres; the rainfall amounts are simply staggering with
5-10 inches of rainfall per night not uncommon.
Of course, with this much rain the lakes can rise 1-15
feet per week, or more, during this short time frame of
just a few months. This up and down water cycle is
actually a positive phenomenon, as it allows for
perpetually new cover to be flooded every year and helps
to maintain the lakes with extremely fertile water
conditions, which in turn has a direct bearing on the
entire lakes eco system; especially helping to keep the
bass populations with a plentiful supply of smaller
forage fish. Most visiting American anglers fish
these lakes during the drier periods and do not ever
really get
to see how beautiful and lush these areas of Mexico
really are when the short rainy season sets in across
the mountains.
The east coast
lakes have also seen an unusually good rainy season this
summer and most lakes are at or near pool elevations.
This is also the peak for the hurricane season for both
coasts of Mexico and a strong hurricane or slow
moving low depression system that makes landfall and
stalls across the mountain ranges could easily
push many of these lakes into a serious flood stage
condition.
We look for a
good season on both coasts this year with many very
productive lakes and it is our hope
that you get to spend a few days south of the border
this season and enjoy some of the excellent angling that
is available!

LAKE BACCARAC LODGE
LOCATED ON THE WATER
I just had a
talk with the owner of Lake Baccarac Lodge, Terry Hollan
and he has advised me that he will be constructing at
least 5 more rooms at his beautiful new Lakeside
Facility. This will bring the total anglers that
can be comfortable accommodated to 42. If you have
a large group that you would like to fly into this Red Hot
Lake, we still have spaces available though out next
years season.
(See June report listed below)
On a different
subject, yours truly has noted that Marte Gomez (Sugar
Lake) located just a few miles across the border in the
State of Tamaulipas, is almost at Full Pool Elevation as
of today August 14, 2007. It has not been
announced if the annual release of water from Lake
Cuchillo will be implemented this year; as this release
would place Sugar in a very high Flood Stage condition
with a huge outflow of water over the flood spillway.
As many of you know, Lake Cuchillo is located upstream
on the same River and one of the stipulations made in
the original contract with the State of Tamaulipas
before construction of the Cuchillo Dam was that a
certain amount of water would be released each year so
as to help maintain a viable lake elevation at Sugar.
If water is released this year, this in turn could drop
Cuchillo up to 10 feet below normal pool elevation which
could have a very positive impact on the angling, as
Cuchillo is a relatively shallow lake which covers many
1,000's of acres of terrain with less than 10 feet of
water. If Cuchillo is dropped this much; this will
certainly help to concentrate a very diverse fish
population and should make for some first rate, fast
paced angling action this season. Conversely, 1,000's of new acres of green
cover will be flooded at Sugar lake and the bass
population will of course disperse into all this new
cover and be very scattered. We will keep a close
watch on this condition and make updates accordingly.

I have also
noted that Billy Chapman Jr. is constructing a new first
class facility on Lake Mateos which is located in the
State of Sinaloa about and hour NE of Culican,
capital of the Sinaloa State. This older lake has
made a dynamic cycle back to excellent angling and this
new facility will be opened for fishing in the month of
November with a great "grand opening special price" for
the entire package. Mateos is one of the largest
lakes in Mexico when at Pool Elevation, with a good
population of Florida Genetics and has been receiving
copious amounts of rain-fall and run-off this summer and
we look for the angling to be excellent this up-coming
season. Please call me anytime for pricing and up

TROPICAL STORM ERIN
8-16-2007
Northern Mexico has been spared by the first major
Tropical Depression of the season as it blew ashore in
already rain drenched South Texas. The long
range forecasts do however track newly forming Hurricane Dean to
impact the Mexican east coastline sometime next week.
Hurricane Dean is gaining strength over the Atlantic and is
expected to be at least a category 4 storm when it
washes ashore. We will be tracking this very
closely as many lakes in Northern Mexico are already at
or near pool elevation and more rainfall could have a
major impact on these lakes. |

NEW LAKE EL CAJON

BEAUTIFUL NEW LAKE EL
CAJON, NAYARIT
Construction on the new Mexican Lake, El Cajon, Nayarit
has been completed and the new lake has been filled to
Pool Elevation. The above photo shows the lake at
94% of Pool elevation on January 15th of this
year. This new lake is located just above Lake
Aguamilpa on the same river and when the Hydro Electric
Power Plant is totally completed; this one facility will
supply a total of 8% of all of Mexico's electric power
supply. The dam construction was completed in
record time using the very latest construction
techniques and equipment and has the distinction of
being the tallest dam in all of Mexico at a height of
well over 600 feet and was
considered the most ambitious construction project ever
undertaken in Mexico.
As an added bonus, the lake has been stocked with a
Florida Strain of Black Bass and when opened for sport
angling will offer another outstanding Mexican Fishery.
The new lake is located some 30 miles SE from Tepic,
Nayarit, Mexico, with a new all paved road to the lake
and is approximately 60 KM from the dam site of Lake
Aguamilpa. We will be among the first to let you know
when this new lake will be officially opened to sport
angling, so check back often. We will be offering
Charter Flights into the city of Tepic with an easy

DEAN MAKES
LANDFALL
WITH 165 MPH WINDS AND UP TO 200 MPH GUSTS!

|
Hurricane Dean made
landfall around 3:30 am
(Central Time) with 165
mile per hour winds near
Costa Maya, Mexico. It
is the first landfalling
category 5 hurricane to
make landfall in the
Atlantic basin since
Hurricane Andrew struck
South Florida in 1992.
Its pressure of 906
millibars is the third
lowest pressure at
landfall behind the 1935
Labor Day Hurricane in
the Florida Keys and
Hurricane Gilbert in
1988 in Cancun, Mexico.
Data from the Hurricane
Hunter aircraft shows
that Dean continued to
strengthen all the way
up to its landfall. Now
that Dean's center has
moved inland and is
currently crossing the
Yucatan Peninsula, it
has weakened to a
category 3 hurricane.
Although some further
weakening is likely,
Dean should maintain
hurricane status and
then restrengthen over
the southern Bay of
Campeche before making a
final landfall tomorrow
in the Mexican state of
Veracruz.
As of 10 am (Central
time), the center of
Dean was located about
85 miles southeast of
Campeche, Mexico.
Maximum sustained winds
are near 105 miles per
hour. Minimum pressure
is near 950 millibars.
The resorts of Cancun
and Cozumel have not
felt the full brunt of
Hurricane Dean but
tremendous waves (on the
order of 15 to 25 feet)
are crashing along the
shores resulting in
severe beach erosion.
Even as Dean emerges
into the Bay of
Campeche, there will
still be squalls of
tropical storm-force
winds and heavy rains on
the backside of the
hurricane. Conditions in
both Cancun and Cozumel
will improve slowly
during the afternoon and
evening.
Various
hurricane and
tropical storm
watches and warnings are
in place.
Remember that watches
mean that conditions are
possible within 36
hours; warnings mean
that conditions are
expected within 24
hours.
Elsewhere in the
Atlantic, a tropical
wave is bringing
disorganized showers a
few hundred miles north
of the Leeward Islands.
There is some potential

Sierra Madres Summer
Rains
Many
Mexican Lakes have received
significant rain and run-off
from the recent Hurricane that
made landfall in Central Mexico
with the remnants tracking
northward up the west coast.
As soon as
I receive accurate information,
I'll be posting an update on my
Lakes Elevation Page.

BEAUTIFUL LAKE HUITES
Most West coast lakes
are rising in elevation
1 to 6 feet a week as
the summer rains
continue in the
mountainous water shed
areas. We still have
several months left in
the Hurricane season and
a slow moving storm
could actually put many
of these lakes into
flood stage.
Lake Cuchillo in the
Sate of Nuevo Leon has
been holding steady at
approximately pool
elevation as has Sugar
Lake just to the north
in the State of
Tamaulipas on the same
river.
Lake Guerrero, north
east of Cuidad Victoria
in the State of
Tamaulipas has been
holding at approximately
the same elevation for
the past year or so and
is slowly making a nice
cycle back to excellent
angling.
We look for another
great season at several
Mexican Lakes this next
year. Call anytime
toll free for more
current information.
